Black and White and Wet all over

Okay, I would like to state, for the record, that I have gone an entire week without posting anything wedding-related.

I also told PIC that we could have one wedding-free day each week, during which I promise to not mention our pending nuptials, no matter how excited I am, nor how important decisions on guest favors may seem…

But seriously, how cute are these hand-made-in-Vietnam flower pins???

But seriously, how cute are these hand-made-in-Vietnam flower pins???

I suggested Thursday as our wedding-free day, mainly because on Thursdays this semester I’m teaching two anthropology classes back to back and after five hours of lecturing, I know I’m not going to want to talk about anything at all. PIC will be at work all day, I’ll be at work all evening and by the time I come home, he’ll be asleep.

Easy peasy.

If only all resolutions were so simple.

At any rate, we have a date (huzzah!) and a venue (double huzzah!). For personal reasons, I’m not going to be posting the details of either of these online but I will say this: it’s going to be in the spring. This coming spring— as in less than a year away!— but it’s going to be very beautiful.

We’ve decided to get married under the care of Trenton Meeting, which means (in a nutshell) that we’re going to have a Quaker wedding, sanctioned by my home meeting in New Jersey. As part of this process, we’ll be meeting with a Clearness Committee, which is essentially the Quaker version of pre-marital counseling. Ours will be comprised of a small group of people who care about us and want to help us to determine whether or not marriage is indeed the right path.

It’s terribly sensible and terribly scary at the same time, because we could— technically speaking— find out that we shouldn’t be getting married. But I’ve always liked the idea of a Clearness Committee, even before I met PIC; I met with one when I decided to become Quaker in the first place and you can have them for all sorts of life altering events, whether its deciding to get married or deciding to change careers. And, seeing as PIC and I have known each other for less than a year, we want to both make sure that we’re going into this without any illusions and for the right reasons.

I shall spare you all further wedding-talk for today and leave you with a few pictures from Diner En Blanc instead, the super-secret, super-exclusive, super-ridiculous pop up picnic I wrote about the week before last.

Regulation white umbrellas

Regulation white umbrellas

It was, for a whole host of reasons, not quite the romantic-and-decoratively-triumphant evening I’d hoped for. Then again, sometimes you have to find yourself at the edge of a field, soaking wet and crying to your mother via cell phone, questioning your sanity for having accepted a proposal of marriage from a man who simply can’t get into the spirit of wearing an oversized white suit and schlepping furniture from one end of the city to another. So what if it’s it raining??? We’ve waited ALL YEAR for this.

Ahem.

It was not my proudest moment.

Nor PIC’s.

But I am glad, because until that night, we’d only ever had one real fight. And we broke up afterwards. For all of like 3 hours, but still, it wasn’t a very productive fight.

This one was much better.

I dare say we even grew from it.

And that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?

Anyway, the photos:

How my "Paint the town" themed table was SUPPOSED to look, if it hadn't rained and been already dark out by the time we arrived :(
